Passive Layer

(1) A passive oxidized film that forms naturally on a stainless steel surface when exposed to air or similar oxidizing environment thus protecting the underlying base metal from corrosion. (2) (ASME BPE) A chromium enriched oxide layer on a stainless steel surface, that improves the corrosion resistance of the base metal. NOTE: The passive layer happens naturally in contact with air and can be a controlled intentional oxidizing of the metal surface in an enhanced environment. The use of the word ‘film’ as in ‘passive film’ is discouraged.
